ADH (Antidiuretic Hormone)

  1. ADH also called vasopressin is produced in the hypothalamus of the brain
  2. ADH is stored and released by the posterior pituitary gland.
  3. ADH regulates and balances the amount of water in the blood
  4. ADH hormone works by controlling the kidney to release less water or more water.
  5. A high level of ADH results in less production of urine and a low level of urine results in greater production of urine.

Deficiency of ADH

  1. It is usually due to hypothalamic-neurohypophyseal lesions (central diabetes insipidus)
  2. Also occurs due to insensitivity of the kidney to ADH.

Symptoms

  1. Excessive thirst.
  2. Frequent urination.
  3. Dehydration‌.
