Question

What causes a tendril to encircle or coil around the object it comes in contact with? Explain the process involved.

Open in App
Solution

  • When plants with tendrils come in contact with a support, the growth regulators stimulate a faster growth of the cells on the part of the tendril that is away from the support and retards the growth of cells on the side of the tendril that is in contact with the support.
  • This causes the tendril to coil around the support.

  • For example, plants like climbing vines or pea have a weak stem and they climb up a solid substance when in contact with it.

  • This response of a plant to touch when in contact with a solid substance is called thigmotropism.
