Question

WHAT CAUSES SLIGHT FLATTENING OF THE EARTH AT 2 POLES

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student
Our earth is not exactly round in shape. It’s slightly bulging out at the equator and flat at the poles. This is because of the rotation of the earth about its own axis. The concept behind this phenomenon is: when a body rotates about an axis a fictitious force (force that doesn’t really exist) acts on the body along the radius directed perpendicularly outwards from the axis of rotation. So, the part of earth at the equator tries to fly off, but the gravitational pull of the earth as a whole keeps the part intact. The slight bulging out at the equator causes the part at the poles to be slightly flat.
