The cause of the existence of very large number of carbon compound are as follows.

$\to$ Mostly all organic compounds are made of carbon it can also combine with itself. Carbon exhibit property of catenation (they are able to from long chains by bonding with other carbon atoms).

$\to$ Carbon is tetravent, so can from four bonds with other element (mostly with $C,H,ON$) carbon can also from the multiple bonds as that is alkane(double bond) alkyne (triple bond) and with oxygen and nitrogen too (as in carbonyl derivatives ) in nitriles.
