Question

What causes wind

Open in App
Solution

Wind is caused by uneven heating of earths surface by the sun.

Earth has primarily 2 parts- land and water/ocean.
Land is heated faster and it cools faster, water bodies on the other hand heats slowly and cools slowly.

So, the sun doesnot evenly heat the earth. Also, different parts of land gets different amounts of heat. Forests, are covered by trees, so the heat of sun doesnot reach the ground. Plains or other areas with less trees are heated more easily. So, different areas have different temperatures.

When temperature increases, presssure of air decreses. Air always flow from higher pressures to lower pressures. So, air flows from cool areas like forests or oceans towards hotter areas like plains/land.

Now, other forces like coriollis force, caused by rotation of earth also causes wind. When earth rotates, it forces air to move in a particular direction causing wind. But primary reason is heat from sun.
