What causes wrinkles on skin in older age?
As we grow older, the proportion of fat beneath the skin reduces. However, the previous skin does not shrink. This causes wrinkles on the skin of the older people.
Also, a thick layer of living tissue below the epidermis known as dermis, forms the true skin, containing blood capillaries, elastic and collagen fibres, nerve endings, sweat glands, hair follicles and other structures. Repeated extensions and compressions of the skin cause repeated injuries of the fibers in the dermis. During the repairing process, some of the broken elastic fibers and collagen fibers are not regenerated and restored. This leads to the formation of wrinkles.
