Open in App
Solution

Epinephrine and norepinephrine:

  1. These are neurotransmitters and hormones derived from the amino acid tyrosine and belong to the family of monoamines.
  2. While epinephrine has slightly more of an effect on the heart, norepinephrine has more of an effect on blood vessels.
  3. They are the functional hormones of the autonomic nervous system (sympathetic and parasympathetic branches).
  4. Both play a role in the body's natural fight-or-flight response to stress and have important medical uses as well.
  5. Cells of the adrenal medulla known as chromaffin cells secrete epinephrine and norepinephrine.
