  • After more than three hundred years of white rule, the first Black President of South Africa was Nelson Mandela.
  • He fought against Apartheid.
  • Nelson Mandela spent 30 years in prison.
  • In 1994, elections were held and Nelson Mandela was elected as the first black President.
  • It was the first democratic election in the history of South Africa, and out of 400 seats, 252 seats were won by the African National Congress, the party of Nelson Mandela.
  • The inauguration ceremony of Nelson Mandela was held in Pretoria at the Union Buildings amphitheatre.
  • In his address to the nation and the gathering, Nelson Mandela said, “Never, never again will this beautiful land experience the oppression of one by another. ”
  • After the ceremony the streets of Pretoria, witnessed Jubilant scenes, more than 1,00,000 South African women, children and men joined the celebrations.
