Dear Student,
The major changes that took place in India after the revolt of 1857 were
1. The government of India passed into the hands of the British Parliament and Cabinet from the East India Company.
2. The British monarch, Queen Victoria, was declared the head of the British government in India and the Governor-General became the Viceroy, the representative of the monarch in India.
3. The Queen formally declared that India was an equal part of the British empire and that there would be no more annexations of Indian territory by the British. The Indian states who were still independent were assured that their sovereignty will be respected.
4. The Indian army was reorganized to strengthen the British component in it. The number of British soldiers was increased and some essential services were placed solely under British soldiers. This was to reduce the chances of another revolt by Indian soldiers.
5. The attitude of the British government towards Indians changed. There was a realization that the blatant discrimination and racism of the British towards Indians had contributed towards the 1857 revolt. Henceforth, the British would try to keep a check on such racist tendencies.
