Solution

Instructions:
  1. Formation of the left government and launch of Operation Barga.
  2. Provisions and Aims of Operation Barga. How it was supposed to bring rural upliftment.
  3. Impact of Operation Barga: Explain how poverty declines and agricultural production increased in Bengal.
Solution:
After the elections in 1977, the Left led government under the leadership of Jyoti Basuu came to power in West Bengal. By June 1978, the West Bengal government launched Operation Barga.
  • It was aimed at uplifting the economic position of sharecroppers or Bargadars. These sharecroppers belonged to the landlords and exploited for their work and crop produce.
  • The main aim of Operation Barga was to redistribute these lands to the shareholders, who were the actual tillers of the land.
  • Results depended on collective action by sharecroppers, and the Panchayati raj.
  • Under the provisions of the operation, a list of claimants was drawn up and in the presence of the landlords the list was verified. Landlords could record any protest if needed.
  • As a result of Operation Barga, the sharecroppers received hereditary rights over the re-distributed lands.
  • Operation Barga was therefore instrumental in bringing crucial land reform in Bengal and cementing the popularity of Left politics in the rural sector.
