Solution

Class Amphibia:

The term Amphibian comes from the Greek word amphibious. Amphi means ‘both’ and bios means ‘life’.

Amphibians live both in water and land. Examples include frogs, toads, etc.

Vulnerability of amphibians to extinction:

Vulnerability of amphibians are due to the following reasons:
  • Amphibians have complex reproductive needs; for example, they live in terrestrial habitat but for sexual reproduction they depend on aquatic habitat.
  • Habitat loss has greatly impacted the extinction of amphibians as they require both habitats for their survival.
  • They are over-exploited for food
  • Pollution of water bodies
  • Introduction of exotic species like cat fishes, which feed on frogs and tadpoles.
