In general, an adsorbent is used as a stationary phase during the process of chromatography. It should have the following characteristics:
1- It should have high but selective adsorption capacity.
2- The stationary phase should not react with the mobile phase or with the components of the mixture to be separated.
3- It should be easily available.
The stationary phase is selected in such a way that the components of the sample have different solubility's in the phase. Hence, different components have different rates of movement through the stationary phase and as a result, can be separated from each other.
