Deviation, in statistics, is the difference between the expected value and the observed value. Mean deviation is denoted by σ

It can also be defined as the square root of variance.

The formula to calculate the mean deviation for ungrouped data is σ=i=1Nxi-X¯2Nwhere xi is the value of the ith element, X¯ is the mean of the data, and Nis the size of the population.

The formula to calculate the mean deviation for grouped data is σ=i=1Nfixi-X¯2N, where xi is the value of the ith element, fi is the frequency of the ith element, X¯ is the mean of the data, and Nis the size of the population.
