What did Ambedkar want to achieve through the temple entry movement?

Ambedkar urged the people of lower caste to enter the temple. They entered the people and drew water from the temple well. This made people of higher caste furious. Ambedkar made them do this purposely to prove all people are equal in eyes of God.
