During the 18th century, the French society was divided into three estates. The members of the first two estates, the clergy and nobility, did not have to pay taxes to the state. They were also entitled to collect feudal dues that peasants paid to them. The Church also extracted taxes called ‘tithes’ from the peasants which comprised one tenth of agricultural production.
