Scurvy is a disease caused by a deficiency of vitamin C.
This disease is characterized by swollen bleeding gums called pyorrhoea and the opening of previously healed wounds.
These symptoms were rampantly seen among poorly nourished sailors until the end of the 18th century till finally the cause of deficiency was identified.
