  1. When RNAs are spliced differently to give rise to different mRNA molecules which can code for different proteins, it is known as alternative splicing.
  2. Alternative splicing increases the diversity of proteins.
  3. Incorrect splicing leads to mutation and genetic diseases.

Diseases caused by alternative splicing are:

  1. Cancer: Symptoms of cancer are fatigue, change in weight, persistent cough, etc.
  2. Thalassemia: Symptoms of thalassemia are fatigue, weakness, dark urine, etc.
  3. Muscular dystrophy: Symptoms of muscular dystrophy are frequent falls, learning disabilities, muscle stiffness and pain, etc.
  4. Neurodegenerative diseases: Symptoms of neurodegenerative diseases are memory loss, anxiety, mood changes, etc.
