Solution

Prions:

  1. Prions are the proteinaceous infectious agents.
  2. These infectious agents are primarily composed of sialoglycoprotein – a combination of sialic acid and glycoprotein and usually lack nucleic acid.
  3. According to researchers at the Prion Biology Laboratory at the Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati, healthy proteins look like small spheres, and once they become prions, their shapes resemble cubes.
  4. The two isoforms of prions are: PrPc and PrPsc.

PrPc:

  1. These prion proteins are found on the cell membrane and play an important role in cell signaling and cell adhesion.
  2. More research is being carried out to discover its functions.

PrPsc:

  1. This is the disease-causing prion and is resistant to proteases.
  2. It affects the confirmation of PrPc and changes it.
  3. They are believed to have more beta sheets than alpha-helices.
