Solution: Viswanatha, the Nayak of Madurai, instituted the Palayakkarar system in 1529. Under the Palayakkarar system, the province of Madurai was divided into 72 territories, called Palayams. Each Palayam was put under a Palayakkarar. Taxes were collected by the Palayakkarars from the people of their respective Palayam. Some of the prominent Palayakkarars included Puli Thevar, Virapandya Kattabomman and the Marudu brothers.
