A reaction in which an insoluble solid, known as the precipitate, is formed is called a precipitation reaction.

For example:
${\text{Na}}_2{\text{CO}}_3\text{(aq)}+{\text{CaCl}}_2\text{(aq)}\to {\text{CaCO}}_3\text{(s)}\downarrow +2\text{NaCl(aq)}$

In this reaction, calcium carbonate is obtained as a precipitate.
