What do you mean by atomicity? Classify it with a suitable example.

The total number of atoms that constitute a molecule, is called its atomicity.

It is classified as—

(i) Monoatomic - Monoatomic refers to the composition of a particle with a single atom.

Example - Helium(He), Neon(Ne)

These are the molecules having atomicity one.

(ii) Diatomic - Diatomic refers to the composition of a particle with two atoms.

Example- Oxygen(O2) , Chlorine(Cl)

These are the molecules having atomicity two.

(iii) Triatomic- Triatomic refers to the composition of a particle with three atoms.

Example- Ozone(O3) having atomicity three.

(iv) Polyatomic- Polyatomic refers to the composition of a particle with more than three atoms.

Example- Sulphur(S8), Phosphorous(P4)
