What do you mean by atomicity? Classify it with a suitable example.
The total number of atoms that constitute a molecule, is called its atomicity.
It is classified as—
(i) Monoatomic - Monoatomic refers to the composition of a particle with a single atom.
Example - Helium(He), Neon(Ne)
These are the molecules having atomicity one.
(ii) Diatomic - Diatomic refers to the composition of a particle with two atoms.
Example- Oxygen(O2) , Chlorine(Cl)
These are the molecules having atomicity two.
(iii) Triatomic- Triatomic refers to the composition of a particle with three atoms.
Example- Ozone(O3) having atomicity three.
(iv) Polyatomic- Polyatomic refers to the composition of a particle with more than three atoms.
Example- Sulphur(S8), Phosphorous(P4)
