Question

what do you mean by electronegativity discuss the electronegativity of halogens in chalcogens and inert gases

Open in App
Solution

Electronegativity is defined as the tendency to pull a shared pair of electrons towards itself in a covalent bond. If bond is formed between 2 same atoms then there is no electronegativity difference. But if bond is formed between 2 atoms of different electronegativity it leads to partial charge on each atom i.e negative charge on more electronegative atom and positive charge on electropositive atom. Along the period, electronegativity increases and down the group electronegativity decreases. Thus for halogens electronegativity order (F>Cl>Br>I) . For chalcogens electronegativity order (O>S>Se>Te) . For noble gases electronegativity order ( Ne>He>Ar>Kr>Xe)
