Endocytosis is a form of active transport in which a cell transports molecules (such as proteins) into the cell (endo + cytosis) by engulfing them in an energy-using process
This method is opted because chemical substances important to cells such as large polar molecules that cannot pass through the hydrophobic plasma or cell membrane by passive means can be obtained easily.
Endocytosis are of two types:
Phagocytosis: It refers to the process of engulfing large particles (or cell eating).
Pinocytosis: It refers to engulfing macromolecules (or cell drinking).
Amoeba obtains its food by endocytosis. Amoeba takes in food using temporary finger-like extensions of the cell surface which fuse over the food particle forming a food-vacuole. Inside the food vacuole, complex substances are broken down into simpler ones which then diffuse into the cytoplasm.
