Filtration:

  • Filtration is the separation technique that is used to separate solid compounds from liquid mixtures.
  • “Filtration can be used to separate components of a mixture of an insoluble solid and a liquid.”
  • In the filtration process, the mixture is flowed from above onto a filter medium,
  • The solid that is left on the filter paper is known as a solid residue while the liquid is known as the filtrate.

Diagram:

  • The solution of muddy water i.e. sand and water can be separated by using the filtration method.
  • In this, sand gets collected on the filter paper as solid residue while the water gets separated as filtrate.
