Solution

Fossil fuel is a fuel formed from fossils. Fossils are formed from the remains of living organisms and takes millions of years to be formed.

Two important examples of fossil fuels are: coal and petroleum.

The burning of fossil fuels has a negative impact on the environment. Some of its effects include:
  • Carbon dioxide released due to combustion of fossil fuels increases global warming.
  • Gases like nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide in the atmosphere react with rainwater and forms acid rain.
  • The smoke and gases released due to the burning of fossil fuel causes respiratory disorders in humans.
