Solution
Haemoglobin is the iron-containing oxygen-transport metalloprotein present in the in the red blood cells or erythrocytes of almost all vertebrates.
It helps to carry oxygen in the blood from the lungs or gills to the rest of the body parts.
A healthy individual has 12 to 16 grams of haemoglobin in every 100 ml of blood.
Each haemoglobin protein is made up subunits called hemes.
The hemes bind to iron molecules and these iron molecules bind oxygen.
The blood cells are red because of the interaction between iron and oxygen.
