1. Definition: Precipitation reaction

Reaction in which two or more compounds react and interchange the ions and one of the product formed is insoluble or precipitate is known as precipitation reaction.

2. Example

a. When an aqueous solution of sodium sulphate reacts with an aqueous solution of barium chloride white precipitate of barium sulphate is formed.

b. Reaction:

NaSO2(4aq)+BaCl(2aq)BaSO(4s)+2NaCl(aq)

(Sodium sulphate) (Barium chloride) (Barium sulphate) (Sodium chloride)

3. In this Na and Ba are interchanging their place it is a double displacement reaction as well.
