Question

What do you mean by the distance and displacement covered by a particle? Explain with examples.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1:- Distance

(1) It is the measure of how much ground is covered by the object during its motion.

(2) It is a scalar quantity.

(3) It is always positive.

Example for distance

Suppose Akash is covering the distance on a circular grounds perimeter and he comes back to its initial position on the ground then the distance covered by it is equal to its perimeter that is 2πr.

Step 2:- Displacement

1) Displacement is the shortest distance between the initial and the final position of motion.

2) It is a vector quantity.

3) It can be positive or negative.

Example for displacement

Suppose Akash is covering the distance on a circular grounds perimeter and he comes back to its initial position on the ground then the displacement covered by it is equal to zero because the initial and the final position are the same positions and the shortest distance between them is zero.
