Question

What do you think whether the size of an inflated balloon would change or remain same if you placed it in a freezer?

Solution

  1. Since the fridge is colder, it causes the air molecules in the balloon to reduce in temperature.
  2. This reduction in temperature is directly related to the kinetic energy of the air molecules in the balloon.
  3. The lower the temperature the lower the kinetic energy.
  4. This means that the air molecules don't run into each other as much and don't run into the balloon wall as much, making it shrink.

Hence the balloon will shrink.
