Question

What do you understand by dipole molecule? Explain it by taking hydrogen chloride as an example.

Open in App
Solution

A molecule that has both a slight positive
and a slight negative charge is called a
dipole molecule.

Since a polar covalent molecule has both
positive and negative poles, it is also
known as dipole molecule.

In hydrogen chloride, due to the high electronegativity of the chlorine atom, it attracts the shared electron pair towards itself thereby partial negative charge is developed. While, on hydrogen atom slight positive charge develops.

Therefore, it is a polar covalent molecule.
