Solution

Reduction:

  • When a substance gains hydrogen or electropositive radical or loses electronegative radical or loses oxygen, then the reduction of substance takes place.
  • Reduction reactions involve:

1. Addition of hydrogen:

N2(g)nitrogen+3H2(g)hydrogen2NH3(g)ammonia(reductionofnitrogen)

2. Addition of electropositive element:

SnCl2(s)stannouschloride+HgCl2(s)mercuricchlorideSnCl4(l)tintetrachloride+Hg2Cl2(s)mercurrouschloride(reduction of mercuric chloride)

3. Removal of oxygen

ZnO(s)zincoxide+C(s)carbonZn(s)zinc+CO(g)carbonmonoxide(reductionofzincoxide)

4. Removal of electronegative element

FeCl3(s)ferricchloride+H2(g)hydrogenFeCl2(s)ferrouschloride+HCl(aq)hydrochloricacid(reduction of ferric chloride)
