A reduction reaction is a chemical reaction in which oxygen is removed or hydrogen is added to an element, molecule or compound.

• The H⁺ ions with an oxidation number of +1 are reduced to H₂ with an oxidation number of 0 in the reaction,
• $\mathrm{Zn}\left(\mathrm{s}\right)+2{\mathrm{H}}^{+}\left(\mathrm{aq}\right)\to {\mathrm{Zn}}^{2+}\left(\mathrm{aq}\right)+{\mathrm{H}}_2\left(\mathrm{g}\right)$
