Explanation of Supernatant liquid
A supernatant liquid occurs in the chemical process of precipitation, and it is typically a clear liquid free of precipitate located above the solid part during settling.
A suspension of an insoluble solid substance in a liquid is allowed to stand for some time in a beaker.
The suspended particles settle at the bottom of the beaker leaving the clear liquid at the top.
The heavy settled particles are called sediment while the clear liquid at the top is called supernatant liquid.
An example of supernatant is fluid on top of the sediment.
