Sounds of frequencies greater than 20,000 Hz which are inaudible to human ears are called ultrasonic vibrations Some animals like dogs bats dolphins monkey can hear them
Uses of Ultrasonics:
(a) Ultrasonic sound is used in SONAR to measure the depth of the sea
(b) Dogs can be specially trained to respond to a whistle (Galton whistle) which produces ultrasonic vibrations
(c) Bats can produce and detect ultrasonics The ultrasonics produced by the bats return to them after getting reflected from any object This enables them to detect prey and obstacles in their path
(d) Ultrasonic sound is used in the treatment of muscular pain and arthritis
