What do you understand by valency?

Valency:

(1)Valency is the combining capacity of the atoms of an element with the atoms of other elements to form molecules.

(2)The valency of an element is the number of hydrogen atoms that will combine with or displace one atom of that element.

Example:The valency of hydrogen is 1;then,

in the compound hydrogen chloride,one atom of chlorine combines with one atom of hydrogen,hence valency of chlorine is 1.
