Question

What do you understand of the statement ‘ The vapour density of carbon dioxide is 22’? Atomic weight of chlorine is 35.5. what is its vapour density (Mass of Cl=35.5)

Solution

Vapour density of a gas is the ratio of mass of a certain volume of gas or vapour to the mass of the same volume of hydrogen under the same temperature and pressure

Molecular weight of the gas = Vapour density of gas x 2

The Vapour density of carbon dioxide is 22 : It means that mass of x litres of hydrogen gas or the molecular mass of CO2is 44g.

Atomic weight of chlorine Cl = 35.5 g

Molecular mass of Cl2= 35.5×2

Molecular mass of Cl2 is 71g

VapourdensityCl2of=MolecularmassofCl22=712=35.5
