Question
What does adsorbate mean?
Open in App
Solution
The tendency of a solid surface to attract the molecules of any phase and retain them on the surface is known as adsorption.
These molecules will not go deeper inside the bulk as it is a surface phenomenon.
The gathered molecules on the surface are so-called adsorbate.
The surface on which the process of adsorption takes place is called an adsorbent.
Adsorption can be possible in biological, chemical, or natural systems.
Examples are as follows: Water molecules on a drinking glass, here water molecules are adsorbate and the drinking glass is adsorbent.
