The human alimentary canal is made up of the following sections:

The mouth and buccal cavity:

  1. The oral cavity is accessed by the mouth, which is the anterior entry of the alimentary canal.
  2. The oral cavity is made up of a muscular tongue and teeth.

Oesophagus:

  1. The buccal cavity allows access to the pharynx.
  2. The pharynx connects the respiratory and digestive channels, allowing food and air to flow through.
  3. The pharynx is reached through the windpipe and oesophagus.
  4. The oesophagus is a narrow and lengthy tube that connects the throat to the stomach (posteriorly).

Stomach:

  1. The oesophagus connects to the stomach and is controlled by a muscular sphincter.
  2. The stomach is a pouch-like J-shaped organ located in the upper left part of the peritoneum cavity.

Small Intestine:

  1. The small intestine is divided into three sections: the duodenum, ileum, and jejunum.
  2. The pyloric sphincter protects the entry of the duodenum into the small intestine.

Large Intestine:

  1. The large intestine is divided into three sections: caecum, colon, and rectum.
  2. The caecum gives rise to the vermiform appendix, a fingerlike extension.
  3. The ascending colon, transverse colon, and descending colon are the three sections of the colon.
  4. The descending colon enters the rectum.
  5. The anus connects the rectum to the outside world.
