Question

what does alpha , beta etc mean while writing IUPAC names?

Open in App
Solution

The carbon next to functional group is called an alpha carbon and that to next is beta and next gamma. In IUPAC all the positions are named as numbers only with respect to functional group. While giving the number the least number is given to functional group because of its priority. For eg.,
CH3 CH(OH) CHO and (OH)CH2CH2CHOHere CHO is a functional group. The first one is α -hydroxy propanaldehyde and second one is β-hydroxy propanaldehyde. But in IUPAC the names are 2-hydroxy propanal and 3-hydroxy propanal (As CHO is more priority than OH group)
