Question

What does entropy mean in thermodynamics?

Open in App
Solution

Entropy:

  • "It can be defined as a measure of the degree of randomness or disorder in the system."
  • It can be represented by the symbol, S.
  • If randomness in a system is high, then the value of entropy for that system will also be high.

Second Law of Thermodynamics:

  • Entropy can be understood with the help of the second law of thermodynamics.
  • We know that for an isolated system, the change in energy remains constant.
  • Therefore, an increase in entropy in such systems is the natural direction of a spontaneous change.
