The binomial nomenclature was first implemented by Carl Linnaeus, every organism is described by the scientific name comprised of the two name, genus and species name. Mangifera indica Linn is the scientific name for mango. The Linn is the abbreviation that is used for the scientist Carl Linnaeus. Mangifera represents the genus and indica represent the species. Letter ‘L’ signifies the taxonomist, Linnaeus.

Mangifera Indica

Mangifera indica (MI), is the scientific name of the fruit mango. Mango is a flowering plant that belongs to the family Anacardiaceae which also includes cashews, poison ivy and hog plum. It is indigenous to the Indian subcontinent, with hundreds of cultivated varieties.

Features of the Mango tree

  • The tree is relatively large, usually growing over 90 feet in height. It is also quite wide – with specimens being measured over 80 feet.
  • It has been an essential herb in the Ayurvedic and indigenous medical systems for over 4000 years.
  • Mangoes belong to the genus Mangifera which comprises about 30 species of tropical fruiting trees in the flowering plant family Anacardiaceae.
  • As per ayurveda, varied medicinal properties are attributed to different parts of the mango tree.
  • Mango is one of the most popular tropical fruits.
  • Mangiferin, being a polyphenolic antioxidant and a glucosyl xanthone, has strong antioxidant, anti-lipid peroxidation, immunomodulation, cardiotonic, hypotensive, wound healing, antidegenerative and antidiabetic activities.
