Sir Ector asked Sir Kay to show him whether he could draw the sword out of the stone.

This proves that Sir Ector doubted his son's ability and knew that he was lying. When he asked Sir Kay how he got a hold of the sword, Kay brushed past the question and said that it did not matter how he got the sword but that he was now the rightful heir to Britain. We also notice how Sir Kay tried to hide the fact that his own brother was the rightful heir.
