Poverty in India is widespread. According to the reports made by recent study of poverty in India, it has been stated that one-third of the world's poorest people reside in India. But surprisingly, a consistent decline in poverty has been witnessed with the poverty levels decreasing from 37.2% in 2004-05 to 29.8% in 2009-10.Presently, there are about 269.3 million poor in India and out of this, 216.5 million reside in rural India.
