Indian Secularism is based on the principle of Equal respect for all religions, where State respects every religious community and their sentiments.
As a Secular country, India allows Freedom of religion to all as the fundamental right. Under this right every person , community is freely allowed to profess, propagate, practice religion of his/her choice. There is no interference by government.
However, Indian principle of Secularism is not absolute, Government is not strictly separated from religion. State practices principled distance where it can initiate state sponsored reforms , government can intervene to ban those practices which go against the very idea of fundamental rights to life and dignity practices which are unjust and discriminatory. Government has done it before as in case of abolishing sati, untouchability for the purpose of reforming Hindu religion. Any interference by the State in religion is to be based on the ideals laid down in the constitution
