Question

What does the technique involved in protein engineering involve?

Open in App
Solution

Protein engineering:

  1. It is the conception and production of unnatural polypeptides by modifying amino acid sequences that are found in nature.
  2. Synthetic protein structures and functions can now be designed entirely on a computer or produced through directed evolution in the laboratory.
  3. There are three major approaches to protein engineering research, namely, directed evolution, rational design, and de novo design.
  4. Rational design is an effective method of protein engineering when the three-dimensional structure and mechanism of the protein are well known.
  5. The techniques involved in protein engineering essentially are based on recombinant DNA technology.

This technique involves the following:

  1. For the formation of a stable protein, expression of altered gene
  2. Characterization of function and structure of protein produced
  3. Different types of mutagenesis
  4. Selection of new gene regions or locations to alter for improvement
