What does the word 'Period' signify in the periodic table?
Periodic table
The arrangement of discovered elements based on the increasing order of their atomic number is called the modern periodic table or simply periodic table. The elements are arranged in vertical groups and horizontal columns based on their physical and chemical properties. The properties of elements show a particular trend along a period and group which is called periodicity.
Periods in the periodic table
The horizontal rows of elements in a periodic table is called a period. The valence electrons of all the elements belonging to the same period enter the same electronic shell. The difference in atomic number between adjacent elements in a period will be one. The size of an atom decreases from left to right in a period due to the increase in effective nuclear charge. In the modern periodic table, there are 7 rows or periods.
The chemical and physical properties of elements in a period will be different due to change in its valency.
