What effect a change of starch to sugar in a cell will have on its water potential ?

Solution
As the starch is converted to sugar molecules, the solute concentration is increased. The water potential of pure water is taken zero. If some solute is dissolved in pure water, the solution has fewer free water and the concentration of water decreases, reducing its water potential.
Since on conversion of starch to sugar the solute concentration increases, the water potential decreases.
