Question

What effect does the concentration of H+(aq) ions have on the nature of the solution?

Open in App
Solution

Concentration of H+(aq) ions:

  • The concentration of H+(aq) ions is responsible for knowing the nature of the solution.
  • The solution can be identified on the basis of concentration of H+(aq) or by knowing the value of pH.
  • If the concentration of H+(aq) ions increases in the solution, then the solution is acidic in nature while if the concentration of H+(aq) ions decreases in the solution then, it is basic/alkaline in nature.

pH scale:

  • pH determines the measure of the concentration of Hydrogen ions.
  • At 25oC, if a pH is below 7, the solution is acidic; if it is above 7, then the solution is basic and neutral solutions have a pH of 7.
