Question

What element is mainly electroplated on car parts to give them a shiny appearance?

Solution

On being exposed to atmosphere, iron has a tendency to rust. To prevent this, car parts are electroplated with chromium. Gold and silver are not used as they are much more expensive than chromium. Aluminium can be electroplated but it does not give the car parts the desired shiny appearance.
