Question

What events take place during spermatogenesis?

Open in App
Solution

Spermatogenesis:

  1. Spermatogenesis is the process by which spermatids (a single set of genes) develop from spermatogonia (a diploid set of genes).
  2. The metamorphosis of immature spermatids into mature sperm is spermiogenesis.
  3. The sequence of events taking place is as follows:
  1. Spermatogonia or the sperm mother cells have a diploid set of chromosomes. They lead to the formation of primary spermatocytes.
  2. Primary spermatocytes undergo a reduction division whereby their chromosomal number is halved. This leads to the formation of secondary spermatocytes.
  3. Secondary spermatocytes further form spermatids that continue to receive blood supply, nourishment, and tissue support from the Leydig cells.
  4. The immature spermatids eventually mature to give rise to sperm cells.

Spermatogonia(2n)⟶ Primary Spermatocyte(2n)⟶Secondary Spermatocyte(n)⟶ Spermatid(n)⟶ Sperms(n)
